Estimate of age, growth and natural mortality of longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean during summer 2010. Longtail hake (Macurornus magellanicus) total length (TL) and weight (W) growth parameters were estimated and age structure and natural instantaneous mortality coefficient (M) analyzed. Data were obtained within the framework of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) “Observers on Board of Commercial Vessels” Subprogramme. The information, derived from the area comprised between 46° S-54° S, was collected during the February-April 2010 period. Sagittae otoliths reading of 5,034 individuals (2,429 males and 2,605 females) between 28-99 cm TL was performed. The maximum ages observed in... |

Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide... |

This study of the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758) has been undertaken in order to find out whether differences in size and growth rate between the skulls of males and females could be demonstrated. Stuart & Morejohn (1980) have established this phenomenon in the population of the north-eastern Pacific. The material on which this study is based, consists of 76 skulls present in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH), Leiden. They all belong to specimens stranded on the Dutch coast. In order to determine the age, of all these specimens the number of dentinal growth layer groups (GLG) in the teeth was counted. Thereupon 32 cranial characters were measured of each skull; these measurements were plotted against... |

In general, the increased exploitation of the natural organic resources of the world makes it more and more necessary to apply proper resource management procedures in order to avoid overexploitation. In the fisheries field, the managemente is, among other things often based on studies of fish ageing. Such studies have become an important tool, to be used in the elaboration of population dynamic models and of biological parameters like stock recruitment, growth and mortality. In age studies the otoliths and scales of the fish are of basic importance. The reason is that they reflect th occurrence of the biological changes, which take place in the fish during its lifespan. Such changes may derive from for instance the natural growth process of the fish or... |

Sclerochronology, the study of calcified structures to reconstruct the past history of living organisms, is central to fish biology and fisheries management. This manual aims to provide an overview of the current theoretical and practical aspects of sclerochronological studies. By providing information on the nature of calcified structures (otoliths, scales, skeleton), their uses in fish research and methods for preparation and examination, the manual constitutes a comprehensive guide for researchers, technicians and students either new to the field or interested in expanding their range of expertise. The enclosed multimedia version (DVD) is supplemented by videos illustrating the main technical procedures with an alternative navigation mode based on... |
